Mary Richdale King, 91, a resident of Holliday Drive in Shaftsbury, Vt passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 29th, 2017 following a period of declining health. Born in Norwalk, Ct on April 14, 1926, her parents were Herbert and Zetta Bouton Richdale. Mary King was a long time resident of New Canaan, Ct. before moving to Shaftsbury in 1992. She loved both Connecticut and Vermont, the beautiful fall colors and ever-changing landscapes. Mary worked caring for the elderly and disabled in private homes for many years. She touched the lives of those in need with her loving, quality nursing. For a time, Mary worked at Stewart's Market in New Canaan. She became friends with coworkers and patrons alike. Mary also enjoyed gardening as a hobby and appreciated lovely flowers. During World War II, Mary was the first female toll taker on the Merritt Parkway helping the war effort complete with uniform. The newspaper featured her in an article and she received a poem from an admirer who saw her each day as she collected tolls. Mary will be missed by her children Sharon Alexy of Swan Lake, Ny and her husband Cornelius; Lawrence Adams of Roseville, Ca and his wife Linda; Gary Adams of Shaftsbury, Vt; and Stewart King of South Carolina. She was predeceased by her son, Harry Adams of Kent, Ct. Mary also leaves behind her beloved twin sister Margaret Van Geons of Bennington, Vt. Mary and Margaret are identical twins, which provided much fun for them as teens with boyfriends. Her many grandchildren and great grandchildren will miss her strength and joy. Services will be private. She will be buried with her late husband Albert L. King in the Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan, Ct.
