Andrew D. Demattia

SSG Andrew D. "Andy" DeMattia, 96, of Murrells Inlet, died peacefully at home Sunday, May 29, with his loving wife Sandra by his side. He was born September 11, 1919, in Southport, CT, son of the late Liberty and Alisandra DeMattia.Mr. DeMattia proudly served his country in the United States Army as a staff sergeant during World War II. He served in the 472nd AAA Battalion and was stationed in New Guinea during the war.Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Mr. DeMattia worked in Connecticut as a metal fabricator and plant manager at Roloc, Norwalk, Fabricators and Johnstone Company. He later moved to Vermont in the late '60s and became part owner of the Sitzmark Ski Lodge in Wilmington, VT. Mr. DeMattia relocated to Murrells Inlet in 1997 and was a proud member of the VFW Post 10420 and American Legion Post 178 in Murrells Inlet.Mr. DeMattia leaves his loving and devoted wife, Sandra DeMattia; sister, Isabel Waldera; many nieces and nephews; and several dear friends.In addition to his parents, Mr. DeMattia was preceded in death by his first wife, Vern Maruca DeMattia; son, William DeMattia; and siblings, Michael DeMattia, Liberty DeMattia, Josephine DeMattia, Millie Ferrandino, Fanny Gilberti, and Jenny Gilberti.Per his request, no formal services will be held and inturnment will take place at a later date in Wilmington, VT.
