Bradford James Groom Altoft, 31, a resident of Sawmill Road, passed away February 17, 2020 at his home. Brad was born in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic on July 9, 1988. He was the son of James and Susan Groom Altoft. Brad grew up on a dairy goat farm in Wyoming, NY, where he developed his love for animals and the outdoors. Brad attended Manchester, VT schools, graduating from Burr & Burton Academy in Manchester VT and attended Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY. Brad worked in the construction industry operating heavy equipment and for Stratton Mountain as a snow groomer. He was a trained scuba diver, and enjoyed weight training, physical fitness, Taekwondo, snowboarding and riding his 4-wheeler. He was a very social person and cared deeply for his friends. He enjoyed listening to some heavy metal music, the sounds of the seventies and travelling. He is survived by his devoted mother Susan Altoft of Bennington, VT, his loving Aunt Janet Groom of Bennington, his beloved dog Karla. Also survived by his father James Altoft of Galway, NY and Zephyrhills, FL; uncles William (Jill) Altoft of Lisbon, OH and Peter (Donna) Groom of Avon, NC; aunts Judy (Siegfried) Thewke of Perry, NY, Gloria Altoft Laffery of Warsaw, NY, Mary Jane (Richard) Halstead of Perry, NY, and a large extended family of cousins, and friends in Western, New York, the Dominican Republic, and the Bennington area. A gathering of remembrance for Brad will be held Tuesday February 25, from 4-6pm at Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home 213 West Main Street Bennington, VT. A time of reflection and shared memories will begin at 5:15pm. Brad's socks box will be set up at the funeral home and the family asks that a new pair of socks be brought to the gathering to fill the box so they may be delivered to the homeless.
