C. Elizabeth Van Dyk

C. Elizabeth Van Dyk, daughter of the late Josephine and Edward Kobylarz, died February 5, 2017 in Burlington, Vermont.She was born in Passaic New Jersey, where she met her husband, the late Garritt C. Van Dyk, Jr. The couple moved to Connecticut, then relocated to Dorset after retirement.Elizabeth held a bachelor's degree in neuroscience from New York University, and a Master's degree in European literature from Western Connecticut State University, where she taught medieval studies. Elizabeth was known for her work on Dante, and the use of herbs in medieval cookery and medicine.After academia, she worked for a number of law firms in New York City, first as a paralegal, then as a manager of legal support at Union Carbide. She later managed the business administration of large law firms, both in New York City and in Connecticut.During her retirement in Dorset, Elizabeth held senior roles at Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester, as Senior Warden, Head of the Audit Committee, and as a member of the Vestry. She was also involved with vacation bible school and the Food Cupboard, headed the Zion Outreach Committee, and was a Friend of the Interfaith Council of the Northshire. She was active in the Church's Doll Ministry and the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont's Standing Committee. As an avid gardener, Elizabeth was a member of both the Garden Club of Manchester and the Bennington Garden Club, where she was the club contact for their Education Fund, dedicated to furthering the love and knowledge of horticulture.In addition to her numerous interests, she edited her husband Garritt's manuscript for Napoleon's Air Force, for posthumous publication. She was selected for membership as a Dame of Honour of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller, in recognition of her individual accomplishments, and charitable and community involvement. Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Dr. Margaret Lindsay and her husband Theodore and their twins Alice and James; and her son, Dr. Garritt C. Van Dyk III, his wife Professor Jennifer Milam and their children, Jakob, Nathaniel, and Wilhelmina.A memorial service for Elizabeth Van Dyk will be held Monday, February 13 at 11 a.m. at Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester. Interment will follow in the Columbarium in the church garden.
