Carl Hess passed away Tuesday January 13th at the age of 81 at home surrounded by his loved ones. Carl was the husband of Eva Harrington Hess of Parrish, Fla., formerly of North Bennington, Vt. He was born to Carl & Marjorie Hess of West Arlington, Vt. where he attended a one room school and later Arlington Memorial School. He earned a letter in basketball and four letters in baseball as a catcher. He was especially proud of his father who posed for Norman Rockwell as the center figure of the "Freedom of Speech" which also included both his maternal and paternal grandfathers. Carl and Rockwell's son, Tom, were playmates and then classmates who graduated from Arlington Memorial School in 1951. After high school, he worked for the Town of Arlington as a truck driver and operator of a bucket loader. Later he worked as a carpenter's assistant, and at the IGA in East Arlington while attending St. Joseph's Business School in Bennington. Later Carl was drafted into the Army where he was a mechanic for tanks and aircraft and spent 16 months in Korea as part of his service to his country. After the service he started his 35 year career in printing beginning with the Polygraphic Company of America; partner of Poly Two Press in North Bennington and later teaching his trade at the Career Development Center in Bennington until his retirement. In his earlier years Carl was a member of the Norshaft Lions and Rotary International; volunteer for the North Bennington Fire Department; and past president of Lake Paran Association. Carl is survived by his wife, Eva; and six children and seven grandchildren. Children with former wife, Carolyn Green Bratcher of North Bennington, include Carl F. Hess and wife, Becky, of Keeseville, N.Y., Thomas E. Hess of Austin, Texas, Anne M. Hess-Mahan and husband, Ted Hess-Mahan, of Newton, Mass., Julia H. Maroney and husband, Tom Maroney, of Bennington, Vt. and Parrish, Fla.; stepsons, Steven Niegoda of Waconia, Minn., Stanley "Butch" Niegoda of Bennington, Vt.; grandchildren include, David Hess, Richard Parks, Bridget Hess-Mahan, Corey Hess-Mahan, Maura Hess-Mahan, Erin Maroney, and Meghan Niegoda; sister-in- law, Kathy Hess of Manchester, Vt.; and numerous uncles/aunts, nieces and nephews. Carl was pre-deceased by his parents, Carl and Marjorie Hess, from West Arlington, Vt.; and siblings, Arlene Hess Bolster, and Roger Bolster formerly of Springfield, Vt., and George Hess formerly of Arlington, Vt. FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial Services are being held at The Gardens Clubhouse in Parrish, Fla. on Monday, January 19th. Burial will be in the family plot in Arlington, Vt. in the Spring at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations can be sent to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238. Graveside funeral services with military honors for Carl H. Hess will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington on Saturday June 13 at 11am with Reverend Richard McSherry presiding.
