Carlin Whitney Scherer died at Equinox Terrace in Manchester, Vermont on Friday, December 15, 2023. She and her husband George Scherer III, married for 54 years, loved their final three decades in Bondville, Winhall, and Manchester, Vermont. They were both active with Meals on Wheels and were longtime supporters of and adopted many dogs and cats from Second Chance Animal Center in Arlington, VT. Carlin was a lifelong animal lover.
Born in New York City on February 12, 1935, to Howard Frederick Whitney Jr. and Hope Richardson, Carlin grew up in many places including New York and her Whitney and Maxwell family homes on Long Island. In 1952, Carlin graduated from Miss Porter’s School — to which she later dedicated much time as a member of the alumnae — before attending Wellesley College. She completed her education after raising three children and earned her PhD in Women’s Studies.
In her youth, Carlin enjoyed fencing, tennis, swimming, sailing, and flying single-engine planes. In Wayland, MA she was passionate about acting and directing at Vokes Theater. She is remembered for directing a colorful performance of Godspell in 1976. She also spent time painting in such favorite places as Edgartown, MA; Winter Park, Florida; and Vermont.
Carlin loved to retell the tale of trekking to the Everest Base Camp in Nepal during a months-long journey with her daughter on the continent of Asia. She wrote of her adventures and shared her writing with creative groups in Manchester, Vermont. Carlin is survived by her sons, Richard Stewart Jr. and John Scherer, her daughter Whitney Stewart and husband Hans Andersson, and by three grandsons Christoph Andersson, Ellis Scherer, and Zachary Scherer. Graveside services for Carlin will be held in the spring. If friends desire, memorial gifts in Carlin’s memory may be made to the Second Chance Animal Center, c/o Brewster-Shea Funeral Home P.O.
