Claude G. Dern, 74, formerly of Dorset, VT passed away June 5, 2018 at the Vermont Veterans Home. Claude was born in East Orange, NJ on December 7, 1943 the son of the late Claude and Elizabeth Byrnes Dern and attended local schools. Claude was in the logging business for many years. He built homes, worked as an electrician, as a surveyor, as a building contractor, and wrote a mystery for every town in Vermont. He enjoyed writing and was very well known for his forest educational series "Vermont Forests", featuring Bruin DeBear. In his earlier years he enjoyed hunting, invested in land, logged it and then sold it. He was infamous for his red felt hat he always wore. Claude is survived by his long time friend Muriel Roeth of Manchester, daughter Joyce Marie Dern-Rollins and her husband Dan of Dorset, VT, sister Suzanne Green of Florida, grandchildren Orion, David, Sheila, Sarah, Christine and Claudia and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, David Keith Dern and brother, Robert Dern. A celebration of life for Claude will be held July 21, 2018 at 11am at the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert. Interment will be private. There are no visiting hours. If friends desire, memorial gifts in Claude's memory may be made to the American Alzheimer's Association, c/o Brewster-Shea Funeral Home P.O. Box 885 Manchester Center, VT 05255. A celebration of life for Claude will be held July 21, 2018 at 11am at the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert. Interment will be private. There are no visiting hours.
