David J. Hosley, resident of North Main Street, passed away June 1, 2016 at Rutland Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. David was born in Manchester, VT on August 4, 1926, son of the late Hubert and Margaret (Quirk) Hosley. He attended Manchester schools and Burr and Burton Seminary. David served his country as a member of the United States Navy during WWII.On July 15, 1943, David married the love of his life and best friend Faie Errol Smith. David never made a decision without her and they considered each other equal partners in all of their endeavors. On the GI Bill they purchased their first property in East Manchester and this was the beginning of their lifelong pursuits in real estate.Following the war, David worked for his Father-in-law CF Smith, logging and later he established his own logging and sawmill operation and his father Hubbie Hosley worked for him. He also drove fuel truck taking note of everything he saw. At the same time they operated the sawmill David and Faie started farming. They expanded their farming enterprise to the Manchester Flats in 1961 and in 1969 they purchased the farm in Danby which they loved and resided at until their deaths. They also owned farms in Rupert VT and Hartford and Kingsbury, NY where they made new friends as the new neighbors. When they sold the Manchester Farm, David and Faie donated 10 acres to the Town along the West Branch of the Battenkill River adjoining the Manchester Recreation Center. They loved looking at and purchasing Real Estate, Holstein cows, eating out, traveling to Florida, spending time with their family and always looking for that diamond in the rough, whatever it might be. David was known for his words of Wisdom, going to auctions and traveling every road at least once. David and Faie enjoyed 68 years of marriage until her passing on July 17, 2011. During the five years following Faie’s death David lovingly cared for Faie’s horses and her "wild cat." David and Faie had a good marriage and were best friends which David considered was the key to success, happiness and a great adventure. But stronger than anything on Earth, Faie has been calling, she has waited patiently as she always did...the crossword book is done...and she has rung the bell and David and Faie will pass through the Pearly Gates together.David was also preceded in death by his siblings Hub, Margaret and Charlie and Margaret's daughter Fran. He is survived by his children David C. Hosley (Shirley) of Manchester, Terry J. Hosley (Susan) of Pawlet and Lucy Lu Burch (Richard) of Fort Ann, NY, sister-in-law Joyce Ameden of Manchester, ten grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. David was a lifelong friend of Donald Dorr and the family would also like to thank Mike Abbott for the help he gave our father in his later years.
