David Kilgus

Born 2/2/27, Long Branch, NJ, Son of Rev. George J. Kilgus and Weltha J. Kilgus. Survived by Loving Memories of deceased wife Joan Sumner Kilgus, of 60 years, and daughters Deborah K. Penn, Kathleen J. Kilgus, Carolyn Libowicz, granddaughter Livia Libowicz and Dr. Stacey K. Whitten. 1950 graduate of Union College, Schenectady, NY with BA degree. 1958 graduate of New York University with MBA degree. Certified Public Accountant. Past member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, New Jersey and New York Societies of Certified Public Accountants. Since David's father served with the Presbyterian Board of National Missions in struggling churches, David grew up in rural areas in New York State, an experience which he and his brother Donald both recalled as happy years of virtually unlimited outdoor activities. In teen years, much time was spent before and after school and during summers, in farm work when older farm sons had left for service in WWII. David left school in his senior year to enlist in the Navy at age 17. He served as an Electronic Technician's Mate 2C, including a year and a half of sea duty in the Pacific Theater in the USS Capricornus. Following WWII he attended college, spending two of his summers working in coal mines in West Virginia, where his parents were serving at that time. David and Joan met while he was spending his final summer vacation working at Shelter Island, NY. His parents had served there in his early childhood years and Joan's family spent summers there for many years. They were married July 2, 1950 upon his graduation from college and Joan's from High School. Their first five years of marriage were spent in Schenectady, NY where Deborah and Kathleen were born. A new career in accounting took him to New York City and they spent the next twelve years living in Hazlet, NJ, where Carolyn and Stacey were born. Needing a larger home and better schools plus being near to brother Don and widowed Mother, they spent the next 28 years in Bedford, NY before moving to Hilton Head upon retirement. David and Joan greatly enjoyed their boating hobby and also spent many fun ski vacations in Vermont and Quebec with daughters and their friends. He and Joan truly enjoyed their retirement years at Hilton Head making many wonderful friends and being active in their Church. David and Joan enjoyed many years together of teaching Sunday School with elementary age children, and as years passed, receiving graduation and wedding invitations from many they knew, from those years. He also served for many years as an elder in the Presbyterian and Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. David spent most of his working years in New York City, retiring as a Vice-President of Guy Carpenter & Company, Inc. At the death of Joan, his beloved wife of 60 years, he moved to Equinox Village, a retirement home in Manchester Center, Vermont, to be near Stacey and Kathy and nearer to Debbie and Carrie. A celebration of life will be held Saturday March 3, 1pm 2018 at the home of David's daughter Stacey Whitten.
