Dorothy Grout

Dorothy Anna (Grover) Grout passed away peacefully in her home on July 9, 2018. She was born on June 8, 1926, in East Arlington, where she lived most of her life. Dorothy was the daughter of Edwin and Myrtle (West) Grover and was a graduate of Arlington Memorial High School. For more than 64 years, she was married to Frederick H. Grout, who passed away on October 6, 2008. After her retirement in l982 from Union Carbide in Bennington, she was able to devote her time to joining clubs, volunteering and traveling. She volunteered in the lab at the now Southwestern Vermont Hospital. She worked closely with the Council on the Aging and the Manchester Health Services. She was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church in Arlington, having served on the church Vestry, Altar Guild and Women's Group. She also was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion Post #69 in Arlington, and past member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Arlington Fire Company. Alongside her husband, Dorothy was a founding member of the Arlington Chorale. Music was a large part of her life, whether it was dancing "On the Green" in West Arlington to the tunes "fiddled" by her father and brothers, singing in the church choir, or at gatherings with family and friends. In 1983, Dorothy's love of flowers and gardening drew her to the Arlington Garden Club where she was an active member, serving as president, secretary and other various positions in the Club. She is always remembered for the tuberous begonias which graced the windows of her home each year in East Arlington and the flower boxes on the bridge near her home. She was always baking a pie for this one or making a loaf of bread for that one. Her famous "Dot's Baked Beans" were very often "sold out" before they ever reached the actual bake sale table. Very passionate about the Town of Arlington, she was a member of the Arlington Townscape from the time of its inception and was president of the organization for many years. She did what she could to help Arlington maintain its beauty and historical preservation. Dorothy was an avid traveler. She and her husband traveled the countryside in their camper from here to Mexico and Canada, many times with their children and/or grandchildren. She visited family in Austria. Not enjoying the cold winters of Vermont, Dorothy would travel to Maui, Hawaii, with friends while her husband stayed home to ski the mountains of Vermont. However, some years before his death, they would travel to Maui together. She treasured those annual trips. She and her husband also loved to play cards with friends on "Tuesday nights." Dorothy continued in her retirement years playing "Goulash" with her lady friends. Dorothy is survived by her daughters: Nyoka (Nicky) Little and her husband, Brian of Arlington, and Deborah Minnar of Rowayton, Connecticut; also Jerry Grover of Pawlet. She also leaves her grandchildren: Kevin Little (wife Kelly); Sarah (Little) Arel (husband Chuck); Jennifer (Hoffman) Graf (husband Erich); Jonathan Hoffman (fiance Jenifer); and Brooke (Minnar) Wilson (husband Oliver); and great grandchildren: Alec, Madison, Brandon, Ryan, Jessica, Megan, Sara, Caden, Oakley, Quinn; Candice and Shannon; and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers and sisters: Harold, Kenneth, Medric, and Clifford Grover, Florence Cameron, Ella Pike, Marie LaFond, and Vivian Galusha; also Earl Grover. There will be calling hours at the Hanson Walbridge & Shea Arlington Chapel, on Thursday, July 26, 2018, from 4 to 6 pm. Services will be held at St. James Episcopal Church on Friday, July 27, 2018, at 11 am. There will be a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory should be made to St. James Episcopal Church through the Hanson Walbridge & Shea Hanson Walbridge & Shea Arlington Chapel, P.O. Box 528 Arlington, VT 05250. There will be calling hours at the Hanson Walbridge & Shea Arlington Chapel, on Thursday, July 26, 2018, from 4 to 6 pm. Services will be held at St. James Episcopal Church on Friday, July 27, 2018, at 11 am. There will be a reception following the service.
