Dr. Richard N. Fabricius, 87, a resident of Bennington, VT passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 30, 2016 at the Vermont Veterans Home. The son of John and Janet (Meekin) Fabricius, he was born in Albany, NY on August 14, 1928. Dr. Fabricius graduated from Watervliet High School , Springfield College, and The University of Vermont in 1953 with a Medical Degree. Shortly after graduation he entered the US Navy as a Medical Officer which came at the time of the Korean Conflict. He served aboard the USNS Buckner and separated from the Navy at the rank of Lt Commander. He married the former Janet Pitcher in Berne, NY on October 27, 1957. Dr. Fabricius served his surgical residency at the Albany Medical Center. He then completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans and Monroe, Louisiana. He relocated to Bennington in 1961 where he joined the orthopdedic practice of doctors Ellison and Coughlin in Williamstown and Bennington. He then founded Orthopedic and Hand Surgery PC in Bennington. He retired in 1998 and was able to pursue his favorite activities of playing golf with his close friends , traveling , and maintaining his property and his gardens. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, past President of the New England Orthopedic Society, board member of the Putnam Hospital School of Nursing and a former member of the Bennington Rotary Club. He leaves his wife Janet of Bennington, sons David Fabricius and wife Donna of North Rupert and Stephen Fabricius and wife Lisa of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, a daughter Carrie Fabricius and husband Derek Hurley of Bennington, grandchildren Jacqueline Fabricius and Connor Tilley, sister-in-law Isabel Fabricius of Callawasie Island, SC, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother John Fabricius. A service to celebrate the life of Dr. Fabricius will be held at the Second Congregational Church in Bennington VT. on Saturday, April 2nd at 2pm with Reverend Mary Lee-Clark officiating. The family will receive friends in Webster Hall immediately following the service. Private interment with Military Honors will be held at the Park Lawn Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home- Patient Activities Fund, Bennington Project Independence, Second Congregational Church, or Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in care of the Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home, 213 West Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.The family of Dr. Fabricius would like to acknowledge all the staff at the Vermont Veterans Home, especially those of Brandon Boulevard for the wonderful care and comfort given to him and his family during his stay there.
