Edmund "Ned" Godine Mcelroy Jr.

June 26, 1941 — May 30, 2024

Edmund Godine McElroy, Jr., known to all as Ned, was born on June 26, 1941, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to parents Edmund Godine McElroy, Sr. and Elizabeth Arnold McElroy. Ned was a beloved son, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle, and cousin.

Ned lived with his parents in Brooklyn until his father enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. While his father was overseas, Ned and his mother lived in Weston, W.Va., with his grandparents. After the war, they moved to the village of Ridgewood, N.J., where Ned attended local schools. He met his wife-to-be, Marcy Ham, at Ridgewood High School in 1958. After graduating in 1959, he attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., where he earned a B.S. in Economics.

Soon after graduating from college in 1964, Ned and Marcy were married on June 13 at Christ Episcopal Church in Ridgewood. He and Marcy raised their four children (Scott Edmund, Elizabeth Margaret, Todd Cyril, and Peter Jon) in the neighboring borough of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J. Ned was an excellent provider and role model for his family, always very involved in his children’s activities. He was also involved in local government, serving on the Borough Council for 11 years. He took up running in his 40s, pounding the local streets in the early hours before work and participating in weekend 5k and 10k races. He also ran in the New York City Marathon twice.

Ned spent his career in finance and earned an MBA from the New York University Stern School of Business in 1971. After his first job as a loan officer at Irving Trust in New York City, Ned held various cash management and treasury-related roles at Avon, Nabisco, and the Dyson Kissner Moran Corporation, commuting to the City for much of that time. His last job, at Gateway Computers, necessitated a move from Ho-Ho-Kus to Dakota Dunes, S.D., where he and Marcy lived for six years and learned to love the Midwest. They became quite involved in their new community and made many new friends from across the country.

Ned and Marcy started coming to Vermont in the mid-1970s. They bought a ski house in West Dover with friends in 1981 and enjoyed spending time there to escape the hubbub of the New York Metropolitan Area. They learned to ski with their children at Mount Snow and loved to play golf, hike, and enjoy the natural beauty of Vermont.

Ned and Marcy retired to West Dover in 2000, at which time Ned became very active in the community, as a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and the Deerfield Valley Rotary; as a volunteer for the Mount Snow Ambassadors, the Deerfield Valley Food Pantry, and the West River Habitat for Humanity; and as Chair of the Dover Planning Commission.

Ned loved spending time with friends and family, including his beautiful granddaughters, Peyton and Meredith, and his many dogs over his lifetime (Babette, Charcoal, Winston, Sienna, and Daisy). Like his father, he enjoyed gardening and caring for his property. He was also a huge fan of all types of music, especially cool jazz and classic rock.

Before Ned’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, he and Marcy enjoyed traveling, visiting England, Ireland, Scotland, France, The Netherlands, Italy, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as a variety of European countries along the Rhine and Rhone Rivers while on a Viking River Cruise. They had also been to most U.S. states, including Alaska and Hawaii. They loved sharing beach time with friends and family at their condo in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and at their timeshare in St. Maarten.

Ned spent the last five years of his life in the Memory Care Unit at Bromley Manor in Manchester Center, Vt., where he was well loved and received wonderful care. He died there peacefully on May 30, surrounded by family, after suffering a decline in health following pneumonia.

Ned is survived by his wife, Marcy, and their dog, Daisy, of West Dover, Vt.; his daughter, Elizabeth, of Boulder, Colo.; his son Peter and daughter-in-law Nancy, of Estes Park, Colo.; and his granddaughters, Peyton and Meredith, of Allen, Texas.

Ned was predeceased by his beloved sons Scott, of New Vernon, N.J., and Todd, of West Dover, Vt.

There will be a memorial service for Ned at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church In Wilmington, Vt., on Saturday, June 15 at 11 a.m. A reception at the church will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or to fund Alzheimer’s Disease Research would be appreciated.
