Elizabeth Mae (Harned) Hulett-Bettie, 99, a resident of Peru, VT, passed away February 21, 2024 at her home. Born in Barton, Vt September 22nd, 1924, she was the daughter of Reba (Porter) Harned & James Bygrave Harned. The family moved to Manchester, Vt when she was 3 years old. She attended local schools & graduated from Burr & Burton Seminary in 1942. After working in Springfield, Vt during World War II she returned to Manchester, worked in what was Factory Point National Bank & married Raymond Ralph Hulett on July 6th, 1946. They moved to Peru Vt in 1953 where she worked in Keltons’ Store, served as Town Auditor, and then worked in the Post Office as clerk and Postmasters’ Replacement for 18years, retiring in 1987. An avid skier, she started skiing Bromley Mt the winter of 1943, was an instructor for the JISP program for over 25 years, was a member of the Silver Griffins and the 90+ ski club, and skied until she was 93. Bettie had a life long love of gardening and enjoying quilting, organized & helped put together the many quilts raffled off by the Ladies Aid at the Peru Fairs. She also collected a few ribbons for her own quilts which she called her “Stitches between Pitches” as she was a long time Red Socks Fan. She also enjoyed playing Jazz, Joplin, and Boogie on her piano. She is survived by her Granddaughters Christine Frederick of Peru & Jennifer Hulett of Rutland and her Great-Grandchildren Cheyanne Towne of Brandon & William Towne III of Peru and two nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband Raymond of 50 years in 1996, Her son James, & her twin son Donald and David, and her sister Barbara Griffin. The Harned Fowler VFW Post 6471 was named for her brother James P. Harned who died in a Japanese Prisoners of War Camp after the Bataan Death March in the Philippines in 1942. Graveside services for Elizabeth will be held and announced at a later date.
