Emy C LaVecchia went to her eternal rest on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at age 88. She was born to Vincent R Cahill and Dorothy Bornemann on July 1, 1935. She was the middle child of 5, having 4 brothers.
Emy grew up in South Orange, New Jersey on Cameron Road, and attended Marshall Elementary School, South Orange Middle School and Columbia High School. She later attended Marymount College in Virginia self admittedly having some of the best years of her life. At age 21 she began dating John B LaVecchia who also grew up in South Orange After a six-month courtship Emy married John on February 2, 1957, in Our Lady of Sorrows Church where they were active parishioners for years. They were married for 67 beautiful years. John and Emy raised 7 children on Irving Avenue and were very dedicated to the close-knit community in which they lived their whole lives. In 1986, Emy and John purchased a house in Dorset, Vermont and retired there in 1999. The family truly loved being in Dorset and Emy and John became active neighbors in the Dorset/Manchester Community and members of the Dorset Field Club. In Vermont, they made so many beautiful friends who have become family, most recently at Equinox Village where they lived and thrived for the last 6 years.
Emy was an amazing homemaker and mother. She gave her whole life to raising her 7 children, driving them to school, to endless tennis matches, swim meets, football games, lessons, lacrosse games, school musicals and concerts and more. She was ever present, making breakfast, lunch and family dinners every night, encouraging family togetherness and strong family relationships. She sat with us every night growing up as we knelt to say our prayers. She read over homework assignments and made hot cocoa after we played in the snow. She hosted every family holiday for the Cahill clan, and opened her home to anyone who needed her for any length of time. She was an amazing host who had many dinner parties and celebrations over the years. In the summers she enjoyed being with her family and dear friends at Rock Spring Club for swim meets, golfing, tennis matches and tournaments and great parties. Besides taking care of her husband and children, she volunteered over the years at Our Lady of Sorrows School, at Orange Memorial Hospital, and as a part of the Helping Hands Ministry at OLS parish.
Emy is survived by her children John LaVecchia, Jr. and wife Jane Davies, Emma LaVecchia, Michael LaVecchia, Catherine LaVecchia, Vincent LaVecchia and wife Meghan Pruitt, and Nicholas LaVecchia and wife Molly. She is predeceased by her beloved husband John and her beautiful daughter Elizabeth LaVecchia. She is remembered by 9 grandsons who loved her dearly and truly enjoyed spending time with her – Ian Lougheed, Connor Lougheed, Jack Lougheed, Timothy Bumpus, Joseph LaVecchia, Nicholas Price, Noah Price, Owen
LaVecchia, and Leo LaVecchia. She is also remembered and loved by her brother Peter Cahill and his wife Joanne, and sister-in-Law Diane Cahill, and many Cahill nieces and nephews and many of her children’s friends who were always welcomed for meals and overnights and also called her “mom.” She is cherished by so many friends who will miss her dearly.
