Evelyn Virginia O'Neil

June 16, 1924 — December 17, 2021

Evelyn Virginia O'Neil died peacefully at her home on Friday, December 17, 2021. She was the devoted wife of the late James W. O'Neil, Jr, beloved mother of James W. O'Neil, III and his wife, Mia and cherished grandmother of Liam and Torin. Evelyn was born on June 16, 1924 in New York City. The oldest of three daughters of Edward V. and Evelyn (Roos) Lee, she grew up in Woodmere, Long Island with her sisters, Rosemary Hogg and the late Judith Hicks. She attended local schools and graduated from Woodmere High School in 1942 and received her certificate from Katharine Gibbs in 1943. Shortly thereafter, she became the secretary to the President of W. T. Grant's in New York where she remained before becoming a wife, homemaker and mother in the mid 1950's. Jim and Evelyn moved from Long Island to Weston, Connecticut in 1968. While Jim practiced law in Westport, Evelyn volunteered for various school and civic groups and was a member of the Weston Garden Club. After many enjoyable family ski trips to the Manchester, VT area, they moved to East Rupert in 1974 and Evelyn was a member of the Manchester Garden Club for several years. When Jim moved his law practice from Manchester to Dorset, Evelyn managed the office until Jim's retirement in 2010. Evelyn is survived by her sister Rosemary Hogg of McLean, Virginia and many beloved nieces and nephews. A celebration of Evelyn's and Jim's lives will take place in the summer. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to Rev. Dr. Jim Gray's Discretionary Fund or Community Sharing, both through Dorset Church or to an organization that assists those in your own communities
