Florence Madolyn Greene

Greene, Florence Madolyn , 84 of Arcadia, CA, died peacefully on May 13, 2016 at Arcadia Methodist Hospital with her two sons by her side.Florence, aka "Midge", the daughter of Theodore Holden Thomas and Clarice White Thomas, was born September 5, 1931 in Bennington, VT, where she was a graduate of the Bennington High School Class of 1949. She attended Boston University College of Physical Education for Women, Sargent College, in Cambridge, MA from 1949-1951 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Social Sciences from Stetson University, DeLand, FL. in 1953, where she was a Tri-Delt and active in inter-collegiate sports.Midge married James Daugherty in 1954 and lived in Bennington before later moving to New York City and New Jersey. In 1964, she married the Reverend Stephen Greene in Bennington, VT and moved to Concord, NH in 1965. She was pre-deceased by her two ex-husbands and as she liked to say, "but not on my watch".From 1969-1982, she worked in Social Services and Community Action Agencies as a counselor and Program Manager of special projects for disadvantaged youths and adults. From 1982-1994, she was employed by The Capitol Craftsman, a crafts and jewelry store in Concord.Midge enjoyed the beach, arts, symphonies, jazz concerts, Cape Cod, long walks, tennis, skiing, dancing, reading and laughing. She was interested in politics, the environment, social injustice, women's issues and participated in many community organizations, served on the board of child and family services and was active in the Concord school district PTO's. She enjoyed traveling with friends and trips to CA to visit with her two sons and grandchildren, where she eventually moved to in 2013. She is survived by her brother Theodore Thomas and his wife Norma of Bennington, VT, two sons, Christopher Daugherty and his wife Julie of West Covina, CA and their son Austin; Michael Daugherty and his wife Rebecca of Arcadia, CA and their two daughters, Taylor and Alexandra, step-daughters Betsy Carter of Concord, NH and Nancy Kemp and her husband Toby of Bermuda and Boston, MA; and step-son Rick Greene and his wife Karen of Cornwall, VT. She is survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and cousins. There will be no calling hours. Cabot & Sons Funeral Home and Crematorium Services, Pasadena, CA is in charge of arrangements in conjunction with Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, Bennington, VT where she will be interred in the Thomas family mausoleum.
