Floyd Eastman

Floyd Eastman, age 107, passed away on November 28, 2015 at The Orchards Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in North Granville, NY. Floyd was born at home during a blizzard on February 6, 1908 in Dorset, Vt., the son of Charles B. and Cassie (Stone) Eastman. He was the eldest and longest surviving of six children. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Adelaide Lewis Eastman, his brothers Gordon, Horace and Victor, his sisters, Dorothy and Inez, and nephews, Kenneth Palmer, Paul Eastman, and Rick and Bruce Moore. He is survived by nieces and nephews: Larry Moore (Lorraine) of Wells, Vt., Kenneth Moore (Joan) of North Clarendon, Vt., Anna Smith, Castleton, Vt., Ralph Eastman, Salem, NY, Dick Eastman (Beverly) Queensbury, NY, James Eastman, Dresden, NY, Sandra (Ralph) Horton, Salem, NY, Faye (Paul) Bloomfield, Argyle, NY, Victor Eastman (Donna), Lisbon, NY, Roxanne Graham (Bob) of Salem, NY, Rosemary Morrison of Hudson Falls, NY, Sheila Stanton and Sandra Young, both of Florence, OR., Joanne Waite (Donald) of Pawlet, VT., and Charlotte White (Paul) of DeFuniak Springs, FL and many grand and great grand nieces and nephews. Floyd spent his teen years into his 20's working for area farmers, but he decided that farming was not his favorite type of work. He and Addie were married in 1927, and he began working in retail. In 1944, they purchased a business from Ray Utley. That business became Eastman's Market which sold quality meats, maple syrup and the very best cheddar cheese from a large wheel on the counter. Floyd purchased the wheels and then aged them further in his basement until they were just right. He and Addie enjoyed their years in the market working with Red Hinckley, Chet Taft, and Barney Hazelton, particularly all the practical jokes between Addie and the guys. Floyd was a 65+ year member of Adoniram Lodge # 42 where he was Secretary for 37 years. He was a member of Cairo Lodge A.A.O.N.M.S. and a Past Grand Lodge officer. He was also a member of the Manchester Lions Club for 25 years where he spent many summer days grilling chickens for the annual Lion's barbeques. Floyd was a great storyteller. He enjoyed telling stories about his trip as part of a cattle drive from Vermont to Massachusetts in about 1925, stories about farming in his early years, including "roping" hay on steep hillsides, stories about life in Dorset and Manchester over the past 100 years, and of course, fishing stories. He will be missed! His family is particularly grateful to Harvey and Dottie Brophy and family, and to Kathy and Mark Jaeger for being such great neighbors, and for the Rutland Area Visiting Nurses and Granville Family Health, all of whom allowed him at stay at home for many more years than he would have been able to otherwise. We are also grateful to the staff at The Orchards Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre for their excellent care. At his request, there will be no visiting hours. Graveside services will be Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at 2 pm at the Mettowee Valley Cemetery in Pawlet, Vt. If friends desire memorial gifts in Floyd's memory may be made to Adoniram Lodge #42 or the Rutland Area Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice. At his request, there will be no visiting hours. Graveside services will be Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at 2 pm at the Mettowee Valley Cemetery in Pawlet, VT.
