Frederick John Skwirut passed away at the age of 82 on Sunday morning, February 18, 2024. Fred was born in Natrona, PA on May 15, 1941 to Fred C.and Helen Theresa (Wiktorowicz) Skwirut. After high school, Fred joined ROTC and attended Carnegie Mellon. He then joined the Army and was stationed in Korea. Afterwards, he became a press man living in Northern New Jersey and working in NYC. For weekend fun, he joined the ski patrol at Haystack Ski area where he met his future wife, Dorothy, in 1969. After marrying, Fred became a building contractor. In his lifetime Fred built at least 40 homes from bottom to top. He was a founding father of the local rescue squad. He was a member of the school board. He spent 10 years as the elected chairman of the Wilmington Vermont Selectboard. During that time, he was quite entertaining in roles with the Friends of Historic Memorial Hall and the Deerfield Valley Players. In his later years he served on the beautification committee, as a tree warden, and most recently as the sexton of the town’s cemeteries. Fred’s goal was to leave a lasting and welcomed impression on his community. Fred is predeceased by his parents, his son, Fred Jr., his brother, Gerald Skwirut, and his wife, Dorothy. He leaves behind his children, Stacey (Will Hurley) and Adam (Beth Nichols), his daughter in law, Belle, and five grandchildren, Lincoln, Daltyn, and Oliver Hurley, Hayden and Haleiah Skwirut. Others who will greatly miss him are his sisters Anita, Elaine, and Mary Ann, his sisters in law Linda Rotolo and Joanne, and his friends and neighbors whose company he enjoyed. He will be especially missed by the people he had breakfast with and the farmers with whom he shared great wisdom. Church services followed by refreshments will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Wilmington, VT on Thursday February 29 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the Deerfield Valley Rescue Squad at 22 Stowe Hill RD, in Wilmington, VT.
