James Gelston Affleck, III, 92, passed away Sunday March 8, 2015 at his home in Shaftsbury, VT. Jim was born in Yonkers, NY on February 6, 1923, the son of James Gelston Affleck, Jr. and Francelia Johnson Affleck. Educated at Deerfield Academy, he received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Princeton University. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and participated in the Normandy invasion at Utah Beach as well as in the Pacific theater. Jim worked for American Cyanamid his entire career, starting as a research chemist and rising to CEO and Chairman of the Board. A great believer in scientific research, he developed the pharmaceutical research program at Lederle Labs. He loved golf and was a member of Augusta National Golf Club, where he once scored a hole-in-one. He enjoyed fishing, sailing, and boating on the St. Lawrence River and was an avid football fan (Giants, Patriots) and baseball fan (Brooklyn Dodgers, Red Sox). Jim also enjoyed listening to Big Band and classical music. He is survived by his children, Nancy Affleck McKenzie and her husband Bruce of Danbury, CT, James G. Affleck, IV and his wife Diane of Andover, MA, and Margaret Affleck of Shaftsbury, VT; and by his sister May F. Affleck of Shelburne, VT, grandchildren Elizabeth, Catherine, and Caroline McKenzie, Meredith and Kellen Affleck, and great granddaughter Emily Bryant. At the request of the family, funeral services will be private. There are no visiting hours. Gifts in Jim's memory may be made to the Long Trail School in Dorset, VT or to the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department in Clayton, NY. All donations should be mailed c/o Brewster & Shea Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester Center, Vermont 05255. At the request of the family, funeral services will be private. There are no visiting hours.
