Joan Irene Krane, 97, a resident of Shaftsbury, passed away peacefully on Monday June 13, 2022 at her home surrounded by her daughters. Joan was born in London, England on March 27, 1925 the daughter of the late Albert and Lillian (Aslett) House. She lived in London during “the blitz” in WW2. She often retold stories to her children and grandchildren of living in that turbulent time. This is what made Joan the courageous and resilient person she was. In 1953, she met a “yank” USAF SSGT Mortimer F. Krane when he was stationed in London during the Korean War. They fell in love and returned to America to begin their lives together. They were happily married for 58 years. Joan was very proud of her “English” flower gardens. She had a prolific wall of rhododendrons, roses, peonies, and mixed flower beds that were often admired by her neighbors and people passing by. In 1999, Joan’s garden was featured in the Bennington RAHC Garden Tour. Joan was also known for creating lots of wonderful knit scarves, sweaters, quilts, and hand crafted items for family and friends. After her children were grown, she became the nanny for her neighbor’s children. As adults, they still think of her with wonderful memories of their time spent together. Above all else, Joan enjoyed cooking and entertaining and she cherished time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. Joan was a lover of nature, birds, and animals. Often strays would find their way to her door step and sometimes they would become the family pets. The world will be a little less interesting without her in it. Joan is survived by her daughters Michelle Krane of Shaftsbury, VT, Susan Krane Ruscitto of Scotia NY, and Robin Krane of Windham, NH. She is also survived by her grandchildren Nicholas and Ryan Ruscitto, Rick Krane, Tamara McNulty, and Jody Krane Ronayne, and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Mortimer Krane who passed away January 24, 2012 and a son, Roger “Michael” Krane, who passed away August 16, 1993. At the request of the family private graveside services will be held in Parklawn Cemetery. If friends desire, memorial gifts in Joan’s memory may be made to BAYADA Hospice or the Second Chance Animal Shelter, c/o Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home P.O. Box 957 Bennington, VT 05201.
