John A. Pless, Jr, a resident of Mending Walls Road, passed away unexpectedly Monday December 7, 2015. John was born in Jakarta, Indonesia on March 10, 1930 - the son of the late John Anton Pless and Madeline (Sichel). He attended local schools and graduated from The University in Enschede, Netherlands. John was a science teacher for many years. He taught at Le Lycee Francais in New York City, the Institute for the Blind in the Bronx and the Hewlett School in East Islip, New York for twenty-five years before retiring to Dorset, Vermont. John was a member of the Dorset Field Club, the Corn Exchange as well as a former member of the Anglers Club in New York City, the Academy of Science and the Wantastiquet Trout Club. John had been a member of the Stratton Mountain ski patrol, served on the Board of the Prudential Committee in Dorset, was on the Advisory Board at Merck Forrest and was a Justice of the Peace for the town of Dorset. He was a true outdoors-man who loved fly fishing, hunting, sailing, skiing, golf and paddle tennis. He enjoyed listening to classical and jazz music, traveling and spending time with his family. John is survived by his wife Helena (Lena) Hallock of Manchester Center whom he married June 25, 1966 in Islip, New York, son John A. Pless, III and his wife Lindley of Greenwich, CT, daughters Elizabeth Helena Kirk and her husband Christopher of Barrington, RI and Katriena Michele Devlin and her husband Michael of Duxbury, MA, and nine grandchildren. A celebration of the life of John A. Pless. Jr will be held Friday December 11, 2015 at 3:30pm at Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester. Interment will be held in the spring. There are no visiting hours. If friends desire, memorial gifts in John's memory may be made to the Manchester Rescue Squad or the Vermont Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, c/o Brewster & Shea Funeral Service P.O.
