John B. Bradbury, 97, of Jamesville, NY, formerly of Dorset, Vt., passed away Friday, March 29, after a brief illness.
The son of the late Lawrence Bradbury and Alice (Duhamel) Bradbury, he was born in Lawrence, MA, and raised in North Adams MA, and was a graduate of Drury High School in North Adams. He married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie Seddon, in 1947.
He joined the United States Navy in Springfield, MA on October 3,1944. He completed boot camp at USNTC Sampson, NY and received orders from COM Fourteen to report for duty in Fleet Radio Unit - Pacific. During his service he received promotions to S1c, Sp. (Q)CR 3, and Sp. (Q) CR 2c. He was honorably discharged March 31, 1946, in Boston MA.
He enrolled at Siena College in Loudonville, NY in 1946 on the GI Bill. During this time he worked a variety of full and part-time jobs. He received his degree in June 1950.
He joined the inactive reserves in 1948 (CAS). He was recalled to active duty for the Korean War and was assigned to the Armed Forces Security Agency (AFSA), in Arlington, VA. He was honorably discharged from the naval reserve as CT2, March 19, 1952.
His service awards include World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal (Korea), Naval Unit Commendation Ribbon Bar, awarded to the Naval Communications Intelligence Organization for service during the period December 7, 1941, to September 2, 1945.
John joined General Electric in June 1952. He held various mid and upper-level management positions in several of GE’s industrial apparatus and electronics businesses. John traveled extensively during his career, including numerous overseas trips accompanied by wife Marjorie.
He retired from General Electric’s Corporate Offices in Fairfield, CT as General Manager of GE’s Corporate Marketing and Strategic Planning consulting organization after over 30 years of service.
In retirement John and wife Marjorie lived for over 30 years in Dorset, VT where they enjoyed visits from their children, grandchildren, and stayed active in the community and church, and raised their three Golden Retrievers and two cats.
He is survived by his children; Craig and his wife, Diane, of Cohasset, MA, Karen and her husband, Bill, of Cazenovia, NY, and Chris and his wife, Lisa, of Charlotte, NC, and grandchildren, Tyler, John (Jack), and Andrew, His step-grandchildren; Rachel and husband, Ian, of Schenectady, NY, Rebecca and her husband Daniel of Cameron, NC, and Sara of Granville, NY, and step great-grandchildren Sam, Tyler, and Auna, as well as several nieces, nephews and their families.
John’s siblings, Lawrence (Bus) Bradbury, Rosamond (Ros) DeFonzo, Alice (Sis) Sorel, and Elizabeth (Betty) predeceased him. Granddaughter Lauren predeceased him in 2005, and wife Marjorie predeceased him in 2014.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Manchester Center, VT, at a date to be announced, followed by interment at Southview Cemetery in North Adams, MA. To send the family personal email condolences, please visit www.sheafuneralhomes.com.
