June Leary Gutbier

d. September 15, 2018

June Leary Gutbier passed away peacefully on September 15th following a long illness. Her loving family surrounded her. June was born on June 1, 1938, in Bennington to Paul A. Leary and Madeline (Nellie) Zullo Leary. She attended local schools, graduating from Burr and Burton Seminary in 1956. She went on to earn an Associates Degree from LaSalle Junior College in Auburndale, MA. Following the completion of her degree, she worked at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, for a short time. On May 5, 1960, she married the love-of-her-life, Rudy Gutbier. They made their home in Manchester Village, where they raised two sons, Erich and Kurt, and owned and operated The Harvest Inn Restaurant, collectively with their family, until 1988. June will be long remembered as the one of the faces of the Harvest Inn, often working alongside her mother-in-law, Alma Gutbier, greeting and welcoming customers to the Restaurant. Her smiling face, quick wit, and willingness to do anything for her customers were her hallmark. June went on to work for Galaxy Broadcasting, which took her all over the state, where she relished in meeting new people and sharing her stories. June finished out her career as Program Director of Vermont Reading Partners. A voracious reader herself, she was passionate about providing reading services to adults and children. June was passionate about many things including doll collecting, animals, and theatre. She was very involved with the Dorset Players, producing and appearing in many productions in the 1990's. She felt happiest with her family in the roles of mother, wife, grandmother, and aunt. She will be deeply missed by her family. Survivors include: her two sons, Erich (Carrie) of Arlington, and Kurt, of Manchester; her beloved granddaughter, Madeline, of Arlington; her two brothers, Robert Leary of Manchester, and Daniel Leary of Madison, Florida; her brother-and-sister-in-law Robert and Deborah Gutbier, of Manchester, and their daughter, Pamela Meliski of Asheville, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Rudy, and her sister, Katherine Ziegenhagen, predeceased her in death. Calling hours will be from 5-7pm on September 21 at Brewster Shea Funeral Home in Manchester, VT. A funeral Mass will be held for June at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Manchester at 11am on Saturday, September 22. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
