Margaret A. (Smith) DeForest, 93, a lifelong resident of Schenectady, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, February 11, 2017 at Equinox Terrace in Manchester Center, VT. She and her late husband, Durward, had relocated there in 2011 to be nearer their son, Daniel. The daughter of Albert R. and Alice J. (Enos) Smith, she was born in Schenectady on August 18, 1923. Margaret was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School, Class of 1941. For 32 years she worked as a legal secretary for H. E. Blodgett, Esquire and she was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church. Margaret was a skilled bridge player, she enjoyed playing tennis, league bowling, and was a founding member of The Jolly Swingers Golf Club at Schenectady Municipal Golf Course. In later years she volunteered her time to assist seniors with their finances and was a Literacy Volunteer. However, most of all, she thoroughly enjoyed her family and the times they spent together. She leaves her sons and their wives: Russell and Judy DeForest of Easley, SC, Daniel and Holly DeForest of Manchester, VT, and David and Karen DeForest of North Attleboro, MA; a brother, Gerald Smith of Bloomington, IN; grandchildren: Jack, Russ, Seth, Kelly, Sarah, Benjamin and Lucas; great grandchildren: Kaia, Thye, Jada, Kassidy, Trevor and Gavin; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Durward, who passed away on January 16, 2012, she is predeceased by brothers Ormond, Albert (Bud), John and William Smith and a sister, Virginia Barr. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place in Schenectady Memorial Park. Memorial gifts in her honor may be made to the charity of one's choice.
