Margaret "Marge" Joy Hartley Young

Margaret "Marge" Joy Hartley Young passed away on July 22, 2022 surrounded by her family. A wake and service will be held on Monday, July 25 from 2:00-4:30pm at Shea Family Funeral Home in Bennington, VT. Marge opened her home and her heart to those in need, and greeted everyone with a smile. She was born to Josephine Gertrude and Hodgon Hartley on February 27, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA. She married Ronald E. Young on June 10, 1951 at Columbia University Chapel. They resided in Staten Island, NY for over 50 years, where they raised five daughters. Marge was an active member of the St. Alban's Church community, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She served as PTA president in her daughters' school and also sang in a bluegrass band. Marge founded and owned two businesses. She was the first licensed, female real estate appraiser in New York at Marge Young Realty and owned a restaurant, My Dutch Hut, in Staten Island. Marge moved to Bennington, VT in 2016 where the kind staff at Brookdale Clarebridge and local hospice cared for her until her death. Marge is predeceased by her husband and her siblings, Rose Bowers and Hodge Hartley. She is survived by her five loving daughters and their spouses: Joy and Bob Miller, Sharon Young and Tom Broderidge, Eileen and Thomas Mezzo, Kathleen Young and Lawrence Powell, and Ruth Young and Michael Bach. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren: Vesper Stamper (Ben), Brent Miller (Heather), Bernard Braun, Meryl Braun (AJ), Marissa Garvey (Dustin), Nicholas Schwartz, Sydney Collins (Andrew), John Schwartz, Luke Miller (Lauren), Ben Ganon (Hannah), Margo Ganon (Richard), Morgan Ganon (Dillon), and Cadence Schwartz. She had seven great-grandchildren: Alban, Arden, Simon, Adelaide, Caoimhe, Róisín, and Marlow. In lieu of flowers and in honor of her big heart, her family asks that you please send a donation in her name to a charity of your choosing.
