Marjorie I Galvin

March 2, 1922 — February 23, 2021

Marjorie I. Galvin, 98, of Bennington VT passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 23, 2021 at the Brookdale Fillmore Pond Assisted Living Facility in Bennington (VT), where she resided for the last three years. Born on March 2, 1922, she was the daughter of the late George and Florence (Gale) Galvin, and was the fifth of eight children. Having been born and raised in Salisbury VT on a large dairy farm, she became a lifelong resident of Bennington VT, having relocated to Bennington in October 1942. She was a graduate of the Albany Business School and worked for many years as a manager at the State Office Department of Employment and Training in Bennington VT, until her retirement. Throughout her life, she did a great deal of volunteer work, including volunteering at the Congregational Church, the Bennington Museum and the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, where she was a member of the Grey Ladies of the American Red Cross for more than 50 years. She was an active and proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, an organization whose members can trace an ancestor who helped contribute to securing the independence of the United States of America and whose members are committed to community service, preserving history, educating children and honoring and supporting those who serve our nation, and thru which she enjoyed researching her own family history. She was also a member of the Second Congregational Church in Bennington VT since1942. Strongly independent, loving and caring, and always helping, she was a beloved and active participant in the lives of her nieces, nephews, grandniece and grandnephews, having, for the last 45 years, shared holidays and many vacations with her youngest sister, June Lucia’s family in Connecticut. She was known to love a good cup of strong black coffee, a freshly baked helping of homemade Galvin recipe baked beans and getting together for yearly family picnics in Bennington. Always interested in trying new things and in lifelong learning, she enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, sewing, knitting, embroidering, refinishing furniture, swimming at Lake Dunmore and spending time with family and friends, sharing stories, memories and a good happy laugh. She was an excellent and avid bridge player, enjoyed crossword puzzles and was an excellent cook and baker, with many of her recipes becoming family favorites and an essential part of holiday traditions. Loving and giving, she was a cherished member of her family. Always active and independent, resilient and strong, she was a true Vermonter. Our hearts are broken at her passing, and she will be deeply missed by her family and all those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her sister Josephine Haines of Williston VT, her niece Dr. Mary Lucia of South Windsor, CT, a nephew Thomas Lucia of Fitchburg, MA, grandniece Erin (Parks) Waters of Irmo, SC, grandnephews Alan Parks of Lexington, SC, Brian Parks of Goose Creek, SC, and Michael Parks of North Charleston, SC, great grandnephews and great grandnieces William, Thomas, Lucia, Liliana, Waverly and Chase and many more loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four sisters Laura Oney of Middlebury, VT, Elizabeth Davis of Williston, VT, Eleanor Place of Peru, NY and June Lucia of South Windsor, CT, her two brothers Stanley Galvin of Salisbury, VT and Ellsworth Galvin of Salisbury, VT and her niece Ann (Lucia) Parks of Lexington, SC. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday March 9, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. at the Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home, 213 Main Street, Bennington VT, 05201. Internment will be announced at a later date in the Spring and will be held at the Holman Cemetery in Salisbury, VT.
