Mary Harmon Whiteway Harrington, 91, a resident of Apple Hill Road and formerly of Albe Drive, passed away Saturday January 24, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family. Mary, a lifelong resident of Bennington, was born in Bennington on December 13, 1923 the daughter of Harry Edward and Rose Elizabeth (Warren) Harmon. Mary attended the Bennington Hicks School, graduated from Bennington High School in 1941 and the University of Vermont in 1945. Mary then went on and earned her Masters Degree in Literature. Mary taught for thirty six years. Her first year teaching was spent in Marshfield and then Pownal. She returned to Bennington and after the untimely passing of her mother, she moved to the farm where she learned to pasteurize milk, milk cows and deliver milk. She returned to her teaching career following her time on the farm in Arlington and Bennington schools. Mary was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed knitting. She enjoyed traveling with her husband Gaylord, was an avid reader and always had animals in her life. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, served on the National Board of American Baptist Women and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Mary leaves behind her daughter Cynthia Marsh and her husband Robert of Bennington, grandchild Bryan Edward Watson of Bennington, great grandchildren Bryan Matthew Watson and John David Watson of Bennington and her great-great grandchild Bryce Matthew Watson. She was preceded in death by her first husband John Whiteway, her second husband Gaylord Harrington, her siblings Harry Edward Harmon,Jr. who died in 1919, Warren Edward Harmon who died in 1991, Richard Francis Harmon who died in 2013, Thressa Gwenneth Harmon and Virginia Harmon who died in 1938 and her grandchild Kimberly Ann Watson-Shand who died in 1987. A celebration of the life of Mary Harmon Whiteway Harrington will be held Saturday morning January 31, 2015 at 11am at the First Baptist Church in Bennington. Interment will be private. A visiting hour will precede the service at the First Baptist Church on Saturday January 31, 2015 from 10-11am. If friends desire, memorial gifts in Mary's memory may be made to the First baptist Church or the 4C's (Cancer Center Community Crusaders) c/o Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home P.O.
