Matthew Onorato, 48, a lifelong resident of Bennington, Vermont passed away unexpectedly on March 23rd, 2025 at his residence.
Matthew was born in Bennington, VT on March 15th, 1977 the son Brenda (Miller) Knapp and William Onorato. He attended Bennington Schools, Class of 1995. Matthew was employed by National Hanger in North Bennington, VT at the time of his passing.
Family was very important to Matthew. His son Tyler was the shining star of his life. Matthew met Megan Hempstead when his son Tyler was 6. She became an important part of their lives. Matthew also had another shining star from a previous relationship, Courtney Cameron Clough, whom he raised and accepted as his own daughter. When Courtneys’ son, Jasper, was born, Matthew was honored to be his grandfather.
He enjoyed spending time in nature, whether it was hunting, fishing, boating, or camping. He especially loved spending time at Somerset Reservoir. He was a true outdoorsman. If the sun was out, he had a smile on his face. When he wasn’t spending his time outside, he could be found enjoying true crime TV shows.
Matthew is survived by the love of his life and partner of 20 years, Megan Hempstead, his son, Tyler Onorato, his daughter, Courtney Cameron-Clough (Matt Wilson) and one grandson, Jasper, parents, Brenda Knapp and William Onorato, four brothers, Mark Onorato, David Onorato, Andrew Onorato and William Shea, two sisters, Jennifer Onorato and Kathy Graham. Matthew is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Matthew was also proud to be a part of the Hempstead family, and had special bonds with Meghan's parents, Bonnie and David Hempstead.
He was predeceased by his grandfather, Tom Miller.
Services for Matthew will be held at the convenience of his family.
