Pauline Bertha Marshall, 95, a resident of Homestead Mews, North Bennington, passed away on Saturday, October 13th at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation. She was born on September 19, 1923 in Adams, MA to Herman and Martha (Hoffmann) Hilse. Her family moved to Lewiston, ME in 1942, where they lived until 1948. They then relocated to Shaftsbury, VT and in 1950 she married Edward W. Marshall of Bennington. Pauline worked for the Berkshire Mills in Adams, MA, the Barker Shoe Company in Lewiston, ME making army shoes, Knapp Shoes in Lewiston; the EZ Mill, Union Carbide, BenMont Corp. and Tansitor Electronics in Bennington. Pauline learned to read at the age of 3 and never stopped reading until she got macular degeneration a few years ago. At the age of 58 she earned her GED and driver's license while living in Utah. She enjoyed music, camping with her family, rides in the country, crosswords, and was an ace at Scrabble and Rummy. Her membership in the Young at Heart, the Go Getters and other senior groups brought her much joy. She was also a gifted poet and artist and was known for her apple pie. Her house was always open to all, and she was called "Mom" by her children's friends. She loved all animals and took every opportunity to feed and nurture them. Her family was everything to her and she never missed a chance to show her love. She liked to travel and spent much time throughout the years traveling with her eldest daughter, culminating with a cruise which included parasailing at the age of 89. She is survived by her daughters, Martha Leister of Bennington, Sharon Appell (Stephen) of Pittsfield, MA, and Lynne Cassano (Rene) of Bennington; 4 grandchildren: Chris Howell (Alisa) of Roy, UT; Rachel and Emily Appell of Pittsfield, MA; and Silvia Cassano of Bennington, several nieces and nephews, and two great-grandchildren: Spencer and Hailey Howell of Roy, UT. She was predeceased by her husband Edward, infant son, Wayne, a brother Robert Hilse, and a dear friend and companion, Alton Parker. Pauline will be greatly missed by anyone who got to know her. Calling hours will take place at Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home on Friday, October 19 from 5 to 7pm with a service at the Second Congregational Church in Bennington at 3pm on Saturday, October 20, 2018. A private burial will take place at Bellevue Cemetery in Adams, MA at a later date. Donations in memory of Pauline may be made to the Autism Society of America or Bennington Project Independence c/o Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home, 213 West Main St, Bennington, VT 05201. Calling hours will take place at Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home on Friday, October 19 from 5 to 7pm with a service at the Second Congregational Church in Bennington at 3pm on Saturday, October 20, 2018. A private burial will take place at Bellevue Cemetery in Adams, MA at a later date.
