The world became a little dimmer on December 8, 2024, with the passing of Peter A. Carpenter Sr., 95, of Bennington, Vermont. Peter was born on October 31, 1929, in Saratoga, New York, to William and Pauline Longtin. After graduating high school, Peter answered the call to serve his country, joining the U.S. Marine Corps—a commitment he carried with pride throughout his life. In July 1950, Peter married Victoria Davis, with whom he shared years of marriage and raised four children: Christopher, Shane, Peter Jr., and Kelly. He spent many years driving across the country with his second wife Joanie, a journey he often reminisced about with fondness. Later in life, Peter embraced a new chapter when he married Marjorie (Russel) in 1993, finding love and companionship once more. Peter’s life was marked by his love for his family. He also had a passion for reading, a deep connection to animals, and an unwavering devotion to those he loved. Peter was preceded in death by his first wife, Victoria; his second wife, Joanie; his third wife, Marjorie; his son, Christopher; and his daughter, Kelly. He is survived by his sons, Shane Carpenter (Melissa) and Jay Carpenter (Anna); his daughter, Sandra Fortune (Denny); and his cherished grandchildren: April, Cody, Jamie, Courtney, Madeline, Christopher JR and Lacey. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, Michael and his girl friend Elizabeth, who had a special place in Peter’s heart, Hailey, Blake and Leah. Peter’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. His life was a testament to resilience, love, and the enduring bonds of family. A celebration of Peter’s life will be held at a later date and time. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Peter’s honor to Second Chance Animal Shelter In Arlington Vermont.
