Peter Saint Germain

d. August 30, 2017

Peter Maurice Saint Germain, 90, formerly of New York City, now of Dorset, Vermont, passed away at home on August 30, 2017. Peter was predeceased by his beloved wife of over 40 years, Janet, who died less than a year before. Peter was the loving father of Janet L. L. Saint Germain, father-in-law of David J. Cahill, and proud grandfather of Clara L. Cahill. He leaves behind these loved ones, his sister Tita Karl, and many nieces and nephews. Peter was one of six children born to Maurice and Loretta St. Germain, Americans living just outside of Paris. He was close to his siblings all his life, four of whom have predeceased him. Peter grew up in France until the advent of World War II led his family to return to the United States. They moved first to New Orleans, Louisiana and then Montclair, New Jersey. Peter graduated from Montclair High School at 16, and later graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1949 after serving in the US Army from 1945-1946 in Northern Italy. After graduating from MIT, he spent one year working on an oil rig in Eastern Montana with The Texas Company. He then worked for The Sperry Gyroscope Company as a project engineer for five years. During that time he read about investment banking in a magazine article and discovered his calling. He joined Morgan Stanley & Co in 1955 as an investment banker and went on a leave of absence from 1963 to 1965 to serve with the Washington, D.C. based International Bank for Reconstruction and Development which sent him to Japan, Pakistan and Colombia. At Morgan Stanley he became a general partner in 1968 and Managing Director in 1970 before retiring from active employment in 1982 and being elected an Advisory Director. Peter was an active supporter of MIT in retirement and was elected to the Corporation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for two terms from 1989 to 1999, serving as President of the Association of Alumni and Alumnae from 1991-1992. He maintained life long friendships with his Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity brothers and the rowers on the MIT crew team, where he was a coxswain. After moving to Dorset, Vermont full time in 1998, Peter became involved with the board of the Southern Vermont Arts Center, where he served as Treasurer, and the Dorset Nursing Association. A funeral will be held at St. Paul's Church in Manchester, Vermont at 10am on Tuesday, September 5th. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to VNA and Hospice of the SW Region of Vermont.
