On September 27, 2024, Reverend Fergus Cochran of Dorset, VT, formerly of Shushan, NY, and Plainfield, NJ, peacefully passed away at the age of 90. A devoted minister and beloved leader in the Shushan community, he served at the United Presbyterian Church for over 30 years, profoundly impacting countless lives through his inspiring sermons and acts of kindness. With a deep understanding of scripture and a genuine commitment to service, Fergus was a guiding light, offering solace to many during difficult times and celebrating joyous moments with an open heart. Beyond his pastoral duties, Fergus was an avid golfer who shared his passion for the game with friends and family. His love for the natural beauty of the outdoors began in childhood at the Ausable Club in the Adirondacks and flourished during his time working for a lumber company in the Pacific Northwest. Throughout his life, he embarked on many hiking adventures that deepened his appreciation for nature. Fergus proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany. Fergus graduated from the Millbrook School in Stanford, NY, Hobart College in Geneva, NY, and the Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ. He began his ministry at the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church in Plainfield, NJ, before answering his calling as pastor of the United Presbyterian Church in Shushan. He is survived by his children, Mark D. Cochran (Lisa) of Exeter, NH, and Henry C. Cochran (Elena) of Sunderland, VT; his siblings, Thomas N. Cochran (Tabby) of Far Hills, NJ, and James W. Cochran (Carol) of Philadelphia, PA; his grandchildren, Mark H. Cochran, Elizabeth L. Cochran, Sophia E. Cochran, and Byron F. Cochran; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and their children. The family expresses deep gratitude for the exceptional care he received at Equinox Terrace in Manchester Center, VT, and at SVMC in Bennington, VT. A graveside service will be held in the spring, with details to be announced.
