Richard J. Goddard, 85, a resident of Sunderland passed away May 28, 2017 at Albany Medical Center. Richard was born in West Halifax, Vermont on June 9, 1931 and was the son of Winford and Marjorie (Petri) Goddard. After attending local schools he went onto serve his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and received both bronze and silver medals. Following his return home from overseas he began logging and married in 1955. Richard then ventured into a long and successful career in construction and began a business partnership with the late Joseph Rizio (Rizio and Goddard Builders). After many years in business, he retired to enjoy life, fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, old country music, spending lots of time with his family and being at his camp on Lake Champlain. He was mechanically talented, crafty and also enjoyed watching sports as a fan of the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics. He is survived by his son Richard J. Goddard II of Sunderland, VT, his daughter Susan Brace and her husband Aaron also of Sunderland, grandchildren Ashley, Josh and Aysia, and great grandchildren Nevaeh and Khyleia. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Goddard. Mrs. Goddard died August 14, 2012. He was also predeceased by his granddaughter Hailey Willette. Visiting hours for Richard will be held at the funeral home Friday, June 2, 2017 from 5-7pm when the family will be in attendance. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 2pm at the Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home Arlington Chapel on Historic Route 7A, Arlington, VT. Interment will follow in the family lot in Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland. If friends desire, memorial gifts in Richard's memory may be made to the Arlington American Legion, c/o Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home Arlington Chapel, P.O. Box 528, Arlington, VT 05250.
