Richard Phelps

Richard Garrison Phelps, 95, of West Dover passed away June 22, 2017 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. Richard was born in Readsboro, VT on March 9, 1922, the son of Howard and Lillian (Tatro) Phelps. He grew up in Readsboro where he attended local Schools. Richard then joined the Army, serving his country proudly during WWII. After returning from the war, Richard worked for 38? years at Deerfield Glassine in Monroe Bridge, MA, retiring in 1986. After retirement, he worked as a Park Ranger for fifteen years in several Southern Vermont State Parks. Richard was a member of the Battle of the Bulge Walter L. Case Post #29 American Legion in Readsboro, bowled on the Senior league in Wilmington and was an avid Red Sox fan. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, gardening, producing maple syrup, traveling throughout the United States during the winter months and camping with his family. Richard is survived by his daughters Patricia Knight(Ronald) of Jamaica, VT and Pamela Boyd(Leon) of West Dover, VT; his sons Gordon Phelps(Peggy) of Shefield, VT, Howard Phelps(Kathy) of Colrain, MA and Michael Phelps(Rodney Soucier) of Enfield, CT; brother-in-law Leonard Brown of Rome, MA; sisters Mildred Brewer of Marlboro, VT, Elizabeth Trombley(Floyd) of Hinsdale, NH, Mary Ann Moon of Readsboro, VT and Barbara Birch of Readsboro, VT; eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Myrtle Arlene (Ellis) Phelps on July 2, 2010, his sisters Norma Brown and Marjorie Phelps, his brothers Clayton and Ronald Phelps and grandsons Thomas and Scott Phelps. Services for Richard will be held at the Readsboro Baptist Church in Readsboro, VT on Saturday July 1, 2017 at 10am. Burial will follow in the Readsboro Village Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at Covey Allen & Shea Funeral Home, 44 East Main St, Wilmington, VT from 5-7pm on Friday June 30, 2017.
