Sally Marie Ayrey

Sally Marie Ayrey, 81, a resident of Sunderland Hill Road, passed away February 28, 2024 at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Sally was born in Newark, NJ on July 1, 1942, the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Mitchell) Bockwith, attended local schools, graduating from Georgetown University. Sally was a career college administrator. She began her career at Montclair State College in New Jersey in the 1970’s. She became Associate Registrar in the 1980’s and Registrar for Kean University in New Jersey, retiring in 1999. Sally was very active in the Arlington and Manchester Garden Clubs and the State Garden Clubs of Vermont. She was a member of the Flower Ladies at Hildene, arranging flowers on a weekly basis. She was Town Moderator for Sunderland and very active as a board member for the Martha Canfield Library for many years. She was an avid reader of mystery novels, enjoyed gardening at home, and loved her cats, country music and travelling, especially England and Europe. Sally is survived by her husband James Ayrey of Sunderland whom she married June 17, 1972 in Pompton Plains, NJ; daughters Maggie Gimigliano (Mark) of Stanhope, NJ and Ellen Gavagan of Belvedere, NJ; grandchildren Shannon Polombo (Marc), C.J. Centrelli, Erica Casler (Jason), Christopher Gimigliano and Rachel, Lauren, Michael and Sara Pietrewicz; and great grandchildren Aprile and Cal Henry. A mass of Christian death and burial will be celebrated Saturday March 9, 2024 at 11am at Christ our Savior Church in Manchester, VT. Interment will be held later in the spring. Visiting hours will be held Friday March 8, 2024 from 4-7pm at Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home Arlington Chapel, Historic Route7A, Arlington, VT.
