Sharon Anne Mertes

July 2, 1932 — September 3, 2022

Sharon Anne Mertes completed her life’s journey on Saturday, September 3rd, 2022, in her home in Dorset, Vermont with her family by her side. Born in Chicago, Illinois, July 2, 1932, to Irma Mae and Tom Dore, and the eldest sibling of her brother Father Thomas Dore (deceased) and sister Alanna Dore. Sharon Anne Mertes’ life journey was based on self-determination, joy, and a free spirit that was always guided by her abiding affection for the human condition. Her younger years were full of a vibrant upbringing in the city of Chicago during the 1930s and 40s. Married to Professor Mathias Peter Mertes (deceased), they raised five children, Brian, Leal (deceased), Cara, Farrol and Lucas in Lawrence, Kansas. With a uniquely spirited, original energy that touched many lives during her travels, Sharon engaged in life with a deep and authentic passion that never ceased from burning. Sharon wore many colorful hats and brought an artist’s eye to everything she did; from acting at a young age, to being a partner and mother, to working on a sheep farm to many other vocations. Sharon had numerous interests, adventures and journeys, and was never shy about offering her insight, brilliance and creativity throughout the life she led so inquisitively. Whether it was having rose petals dropped all over Lawrence for KU Basketball or driving on logging roads in Idaho 3000' above the Snake River, she never ceased to explore her internal voice. Sharon engaged in life’s challenges with an uncompromising spirit, living her life fully all the way through her 90 year journey.
