Stein Erik Skoug
April 3, 1932 — October 15, 2024

Stein Erik Skoug, of Arlington, Vermont, passed away quietly in his sleep on October 15th, after a short decline due to his advanced age.

Stein Erik was born on April 4, 1932 to Helge and Else Skoug in Bergen, Norway. He came to the United States as a young Viking, on a Fulbright Scholarship and earned an MBA in Economics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where he met and married the love of his life, Sally Haggerty (dec. 1996).

He loved to fly-fish, hike and ski and was always ready for a Skol with family, friends and people he met along his adventures.  He was instrumental in restoring the ancient Kings Road in Laerdal, Norway, which is now a Unesco site.  Always curious and easy going with many great stories to tell, he wrote a book about his childhood during WWII during the Nazi invasion of Norway when his family had to flee to the ancestral farm in Lillehammer.

Known as Erik by his friends in America, he had a diverse career in international business development, heading up a number of groundbreaking enterprises, including the opening of markets in Eastern Europe for Nashua Corporation following the fall of the Iron Curtain in the 1990's. After retiring and moving to Arlington, Vermont in 2014, he kept active by volunteering at Martha's Used Book Store operated by the Martha Canfield Library, and daily visits to the library with his pet dog Rusty constantly by his side.

Erik is survived by his daughter Seline Skoug, and son-in-law Dave Van de Water of Arlington, sister-in-law Tove Skoug, nieces Lise, Sophie and Kristin and many cousins in Norway and the US. He was pre-deceased by his brother Helge of Norway.

Calling hours will be held at Hanson-Walbridge Shea Funeral Home in Arlington, on Tuesday, October 29th from 4pm to 6pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Bennington Project Independence, or the Martha Canfield Library c/o Hanson Walbridge Shea Arlington Chapel P.O. Box 528 Arlington, VT 05250. Both were instrumental to the richness of Erik's life in his later years.
