Vernon Koll, 79 a resident of West Arlington passed away peacefully Sunday May 17, 2015 at Rivers Edge Community Care Home in Bennington. The oldest son of the late Richard and Minnie (Scheiber) Koll, he was born in Rock County, Minnesota on November 10, 1935. He graduated as Salutatorian of Estelline (SD) High School, Class of 1954. He then enlisted in the US Air Force where he served until 1958; upon his discharge he attended DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago, graduating with an Associate's Degree in Applied Science.Mr. Koll began his career as an Electrical Engineer at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, later transferring to Bell Laboratories (AT&T) in Holmdel, NJ , working there from 1961 until his retirement in 1989. Following retirement, he continued as an independent contractor for AT&T, then Lucent Technologies. He and his wife Carole relocated to West Arlington in 2001 to be nearer their family. Mr. Koll enjoyed reading and working on cars. He leaves his wife Carole (Reed) Koll of Bennington, whom he married August 5, 1969; daughter Melissa, son in law Brian, and granddaughter Avery Prouty of Shaftsbury. He is also survived by his brothers Kenneth Koll of Apple Valley, MN and Darwin Koll of Litchfield, MN, brother in law and sister in law Richard and Martha Kulmane of Sandgate, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandson Benjamin Prouty on September 14, 2013; brother Jerry Koll , sister Sharon Hanson, niece Carole Sinclair Smith and nephew Aaron Koll.The family gives special thanks to Maria White, Robin Gardner, Lois Langlois and all the staff at River's Edge Community Care Home for their devoted and loving care; as well as Kathy Hauser, Beth Newman, and the staff of Bayada Hospice for their support. Funeral services will be held on Thursday May 21 at 11am at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10-11am. Burial will follow in the West Arlington Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital or Second Chance Animal Center in care of Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home, P.O. Box 528, Arlington, VT 05250.
