Virginia ("Ginny") Lee Van Wormer, age 96, passed away peacefully on February 28 at her home in Old Bennington where she lived with her Grandson Michael Shultz, his wife Julie and their son Magnus. Ginny, known for her willingness to help others, was surrounded by family and friends who lovingly supported her through her final moments. Virginia was born in Northumberland, PA on March 1, 1922 the daughter of the late Robert Maurer and Marguerite Hallabaugh and attended local schools. Virginia enjoyed a long, vibrant, life rebuilding and flying antique aircrafts with her husband, Van. Ginny and Van were often seen flying aerobatics in their open cockpit Stearman Bi-Plane over Bennington County. Many young pilots or weary travelers would show up at the Van Wormer home knowing that Virginia was always willing to whip them up a hot meal. A great lover of music, she played the piano and guitar,belonged to several choral societies and was a singer in a folk group that brightened the day of seniors in nursing homes across Westchester County NY. Besides being a homemaker, Ginny volunteered in many organizations including The Girl Scouts, The Boy Scouts, The Goldens Bridge Hounds and Pony Club, The Bennington Garden Club and she served as Deacon in her church. Virginia is survived by her children Willard Dixon Van Wormer and his wife Charlotte of Leavenworth, Kansas, Virginia Susan Hoffman of Etna, Maine, Nancy Ellen McGinnis and her husband Robert of Goldens Bridge, NY and Judith Ann Van Wormer of Manchester, VT, 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Willard A Van Wormer. In her many years of living in Bennington, Ginny touched the lives of all that knew her and she will be missed by many. Funeral services for Virginia will be held Saturday March 10, 2018 at 11am at the First Congregational Church in Old Bennington. Interment will be held in Park Lawn Cemetery.
