Vollie “Tom” Griffith passed away on October 8, 2024 after a long illness.
Tom was born in Manchester, Vermont on October 23, 1935 to John B. Griffith and Edith Thompson Griffith of Danby. He attended Danby grade school and was a 1953 Burr and Burton graduate.
Tom met his wife, Sharon Currier Griffith, at the Lone Mountain Ranch near Bozeman, Montana in 1958 where the two worked with horses and tourists. They were married in Sharon’s hometown of Minneapolis, MN on Dec 7, 1959 and moved to Vermont where Tom worked the family farm.
They moved their young family to Montana from 1965-1968 working on the Flying D Ranch with brother Bud and his family. In 1968 they returned home to Danby to work the farm and soon began his 29 year career as a heavy equipment operator with the State of Vermont Transportation Agency. Tom was an active member of the Masonic Lodge.
Tom enjoyed playing and singing country music throughout his life. He performed regularly with Ed Sargent and the Country Generals. For decades he also was a founding member of the Otter Creek Campground jams where he shared his skills and love of music.
Tom shared his love of Vermont farm life with his daughters and four grandchildren by teaching them to drive his ’47 Willy’s Jeep, splitting firewood, chasing errant cows, picking fresh vegetables from his garden, maple sugaring and eating hot fudge sundaes.
Tom is survived by brothers: Lester “Bud” Griffith of Montana, Edward Griffith of Danby, daughters; Linda Griffith Burton of Fairfield, OH, Melissa Griffith Reed of Arlington; grandchildren Lindsey Campana, Adam Bassler, Nicolle Reed and Kate Reed and 3 great grandsons.
Tom is predeceased by Sharon Griffith, (wife), John B Griffith Sr,. (Father), Edith Griffith, (mother), Betty Falzo (sister), John B Griffith Jr. (brother).
A celebration of life will be held at the VFW in Manchester, Vermont on Monday October 14, 2024 at 3:00 pm.
