Louise Hughes Farbmacher

August 28, 1939 — October 12, 2021

Louise Hughes Farbmacher of Manchester, VT, died peacefully on October 12th, 2021 surrounded by family and close friends. Louise was born in Patterson, NJ to Louise and Joseph Hughes. She received her education at Passaic Valley High School, NJ and went on to get her degree at the Berkeley Secretarial School in East Orange, NJ and years later followed up with a BA from Champlain College, in Burlington, VT. She moved from New Jersey, where she grew up, to Vermont, on to Austria and then back to Vermont, creating lasting memories everywhere she lived. She led an exemplary life, raising four strong daughters and overcoming any obstacles that life presented with her “can do” attitude. Louise was passionate about her work as well as loving and appreciating a good project, building and renovating houses, sewing, painting, skiing, biking, teaching English and travelling. She sought adventure, exploration, history, culture, Italian operas, music and of course, as many of us shared with her, her love for ice cream and pizza. She gathered lifelong friends throughout her professional career which included: Secretary of the Stratton Mountain Ski School, owner and operator of a B&B in Austria, Executive Director of the Manchester and the Mountains Chamber of Commerce, executive secretary at the Vermont Country Store, member of the Manchester Rotary Club, and when not ready to retire, she continued to work part time at the Stratton Ski School and for Vanderbilt, Corp. until the Summer of 2020. Louise is survived by her loving family: her daughters Jennifer Shaw, Susan Ball, Caroline Herzog, and Barbara Farbmacher; her “sister” Adriane Lechner; her cherished sons-in-law Andrew Shaw, Michael Hussey, Jeremy Brodney and “brother-in-law” Alois Lechner; her adored grandchildren, Calvin and Emily Shaw, Thomas and Phoebe Hussey, her grand-dog Edith Farbmacher-Brodney and; her treasured Austrian family: her brother and sister-in-law Klaus and Mathilde; her nephews Bernhard and Michael and their families; her Japanese exchange-son, Motohiro Tanaka. Louise was predeceased by her husband, Hansjörg Farbmacher and her brother, Allen J. Hughes. We will miss Louise, and in us her spirit, memories and all she has taught us will continue to live on. As Louise liked to remind us: “it’s not what’s on you, but what is in you that counts.” There will be a celebration in her memory on November 6th, 2021, at 2:00 pm, at Manchester Country Club, Manchester, VT. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to: Northshire Rescue Squad or Norris Cotton Cancer Center, care of: Brewster-Shea Funeral Homes, PO Box 885, Manchester Center, VT 05255.
